As the holiday season always envelops us in its warmth, it’s also a time of giving and gratitude. One initiative that exemplifies this spirit was the “12 Days of Giving,” which last year focused on supporting military caregivers. These unsung heroes dedicate their lives to caring for veterans who have served and sacrificed for their country. One organization that stands at the forefront of this mission is the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, which has partnered with USAA to bring attention to veteran caregivers and the critical role they play in the lives of those who served.

The Elizabeth Dole Foundation was born out of a need identified by Elizabeth Dole herself, who observed the gaps in support for military caregivers. While veterans receive numerous benefits, their caregivers—often family members who leave jobs and other responsibilities—were left without the necessary support. The foundation seeks to bridge this gap, offering resources and advocating for legislation that benefits the 14.4 million caregivers in the United States. The foundation’s efforts are not only about providing financial aid but also about creating a supportive community for these caregivers.

USAA has been a key partner of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation since its inception. Recognizing the pivotal role caregivers play, USAA has been instrumental in initiatives like “Face the Fight,” which aims to tackle veteran suicide. The collaboration underscores the need for inclusive care, ensuring VA workers are trained to integrate caregiver support into their care protocols. Through these efforts, USAA and the Elizabeth Dole Foundation are working to ensure military families and their caregivers receive the recognition and support they deserve.

The Hidden Heroes campaign is another initiative by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, aimed at providing a network of support for caregivers across the country. It encourages caregivers to reach out for help, offering a community of peers, financial assistance, and emotional support. Jen Carson, a caregiver herself, shares her story of caring for her stepfather, a Vietnam War veteran, and her mother, who has Alzheimer’s. Her journey highlights the challenges many caregivers face, including financial strain and emotional exhaustion, yet also the profound honor in serving those who once served the nation.

The “12 Days of Giving” serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting those who dedicate their lives to caring for others. The generosity shown by organizations and individuals during this past season was a testament to the collective will to uplift military caregivers. With donations and initiatives, like the $20,000 support to Jen Carson, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation and its partners bring hope and relief to caregivers, allowing them to continue their invaluable work with dignity and pride.
